Unsure of what this all means, Mario accepts Mallow's suggestion to go to Tadpole Pond and ask for advice from Mallow's grandfather, Frogfucious.įrogfucious reveals that Toadstool and Bowser are no longer at the keep, and that the Smithy Gang that has taken control of Bowser's Keep is sending minions out to wreak havoc on the world Mack was just the first of their number. Mario defeats Mack and finds a mysterious floating star in the throne room. When Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, the town has been overrun with creatures on pogo sticks called "Shysters", and a sentient dagger named Mack has taken over the castle. Mario goes to the Mushroom Kingdom to inform the Chancellor what has happened, and shortly after helps a young tadpole named Mallow chase down a thief named Croco that had mugged him. Mario returns to the keep where the sword informs him the castle is now under the control of the "Smithy Gang", and the sword collapses the bridge to the keep to deny Mario access. Mario wastes no time in rushing to Bowser's Keep to defeat Bowser and save Toadstool, when an earthquake strikes the keep and a gigantic sword smashes into it, scattering the three. Mario's day starts out entirely routine: Princess Toadstool is visiting and playing in the garden, when Bowser swoops by and kidnaps her.
Queen Valentina - An adviser to the rulers of Nimbus Land who has locked them up and set her minion Dodo to impersonate Prince Mallow so she can rule the kingdom. Punchinello - A sentient bomb in Moleville who seeks to become famous by defeating Mario. All but three are only available with his shop, so it's best to return to the keep and buy up some of them, before taking the spring after the miniboss of Smithy's factory (the Toad in that area, just before the party faces Smithy, doesn't carry a lot of items). Later in the game, second time in the beginning area-Bowser's Castle (Bowser's Keep as it's called in the game)-he becomes a merchant with some extremely good items. Croco - A crocodile thief that repeatedly shows up to steal from Mario, then attempts to flee before he gets caught. He wields a massive hammer both to fight and to smelt minions from his furnace. Smithy - A warlord from another world who seeks to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom with his army, the Smithy Gang. She fights with gloves, parasols, frying pans, and wields powerful healing magics. Princess Toadstool - The Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom refuses to sit by this time with the world under attack. He attacks with his claws, Chomps, and summons his minions to attack for his magic. Bowser - The King of the Koopas reluctantly allies with Mario against Smithy. He shoots projectiles from the doll's arms and wields devastating non-elemental spells. Geno - A spirit from the Star Road who has taken residence in the body of a doll.
He can control the weather to use elemental magic and heal his allies.
Mallow - A tadpole from Tadpole Pond, he is later revealed as the prince of Nimbus Land. His magic attacks involve his signature jumps and fireballs. He uses powerful attacks, hitting his enemies with various Hammers, Koopa Shells or simply his hands. Mario - Heroic plumber from the Mario series. Numerous minigames and puzzles are also present. Enemies are visible and engage Mario when touched. It has many jumping puzzles, including navigating moving platforms and leaping around stage elements to access new areas. Outside of combat the game is a 2.5 isometric format with platforming elements.
The characters each have abilities and stat distributions based on Final Fantasy jobs Mallow for example is similar to a Black Mage, with low physical stats and HP but powerful elemental magic. Three party members enter battle at a time, the player swapping out characters between fights, but Mario must always be in the party. Special attacks consume Flower Points (FP), similar to MP. As the player defeats enemies, characters level up, gain stats, and learn new special attacks. Characters can each equip a weapon, a piece of armor, and an accessory. Characters use normal attacks, special attacks, items, and defend commands, each tied to one of the four main SNES controller buttons. Super Mario RPG uses turn-based RPG gameplay.
